Dear Ramsey Staff:
Last week the Board of Education passed a resolution to honor the teachers in our district. It acknowledged that “teachers spend countless hours preparing lessons, evaluating progress, counseling, coaching students and performing community services,” and it recognized that “our country’s future depends upon providing quality education to all students.”
One reality the resolution did not mention was how hard teaching has become. What you do was never easy, and outside challenges keep finding their way into our classrooms.
People who are not involved in public education usually don’t understand the difficulties. Worse, they only think they understand. Leave work at 3 pm and have summers off? That’s just the beginning of a long list of misconceptions.
I understand why they don’t get it, and I’ll bet you do, too. Who can really empathize with the demands of what teachers do, day in and day out, and the level of quality that is expected in an exemplary district like Ramsey? Add the challenges faced with COVID, politics, and social media… These jobs are difficult, to say the least. (It’s a lot more than “difficult,” but I have to be PG!) However, every single day and often beyond the workday, inside the classroom and outside the school, I see you working on behalf of Ramsey students.
You work to instill what we have identified in our Profile of a Ramsey Graduate, so our students develop the content, skills, attributes, and confidence to make their dreams come true. And there isn’t a teaching staff that comes close to what you do.
I notice, and I truly appreciate, all that you do, why you do it, and how you do it. Ramsey teachers: You have my FULL support as together we face the many challenges swirling around us while we educate children.
Very truly yours,
Matthew
