Smith wins OverDrive School Stars Contest

Eric S. Smith Middle School won a $2,500 grand prize for its work promoting an app that helps bring the school’s library into the homes of students who have been shut out of their schools due to the coronavirus pandemic. The student-created video was chosen out of more than 100 global entrants in the international OverDrive School Stars contest, which “recognizes schools’ creativity” in promoting the company’s Sora digital ebook app that allows students to access the school’s library through cellphones, iPads and Chromebooks. Media Center specialist Niki Wohlrab was working with a group of interested students on the video when schools closed March 18 due to the pandemic. The group then worked on the video remotely before submitting it for the contest. The $2,500 gift card prize from OverDrive will be used to “purchase additional digital books.” You can view the video below.
